Anxiety may be due to physiological causes, which include a response to fearful situations or impulses. If you ever have panic attacks, these would be manifestations of physiological causes of anxiety.

Anxiety is also due to psychological causes. When you're under emotional stress, you are likely to undergo episodes of anxiety. The source of emotional stress could be something you can easily identify, such as the loss of a job or a relationship. Or, it could be something buried in your subconscious.

You can find several classes of drugs used for anti anxiety medications:
• Azaspirones, to address generalized anxiety disorders;
• Benzodiazepines, to treat panic disorders and social phobias;
• Beta blockers, to treat certain symptoms like shaking and palpitations;
• Tricyclic anti depression medications, used for mood and anxiety-related disorders; and,
• Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, used for depression medication and panic disorders.

Anti anxiety medications can help you with some of the feelings that come with anxiety, such as feeling nervous, feeling worried or feeling your heartbeat. They can make you calmer and help you sleep when even sleeping becomes difficult. Antihistamines can be medications for anxiety.

Some anti anxiety medications are started at the amount you need, for as long as you are taking that medicine. But some other medications for anxiety need to be increased or adjusted until your doctor decides you have finally reached the proper amount to take. Most azaspirones will take at least a week to start working.

Anti anxiety medications may have some side effects; the most common is sleepiness. If your medicine is making you sleepy, it is very important that you should not drive your car or ride a bicycle or motorcycle. You also should not drink alcohol while taking anti anxiety medications, especially if you use habit-forming benzodiazepine: this can cause severe drowsiness, or even passing out.
