What is Spam?

We see it on online message boards when there are too many unwanted posts. We see the same word on e-groups and mailing lists when there are too many unsolicited messages. And most often, we see the “spam” on our emails. In fact, we even have folders in our e-mail server labeled “Spam.”

So what exactly is Spam?

On the internet, Spam is not a brand of canned good. Spam covers all junk electronic messages. Aside from being unwanted, spam messages tend to clog up not only an individual’s inbox or email host but also the network bandwidth of websites. Outside the internet or offline, you already have problems controlling junk mail. The same dilemma is present online. Preventing Spam also poses some difficulties.

Here is where Spam Blocking comes into play.

It seems rather difficult to block spam. But the task is only difficult. It is not impossible.

An email spam blocker, true to its name, prevents the onslaught of junk e-mails. Most email servers provide spam blocking software. They set up a function in your email where you can set up a spam blocking list. All you have to do when you get spam emails is to mark these mails and addresses as “spam.” The next time the network recognizes that particular address, the email will be blocked.

However, as an individual user, you are also advised to get your own spam blocking software. There are many anti-spam websites on the net. From these websites you may download free spam blockers. These software come with tools and utilities to help you get rid of unwanted email. The spam blocker programs usually filter the emails. It also classifies all incoming email as junk mail, which they shall segregate from all other emails which come from safe sources or those which you may call “non-spam.”

Not all messages are safe to be read. Most of these spam messages contain viruses and offensive material (such as child pornography) that there’s really no wiser move than to just block them from getting into your inbox. Through spam blocking, you can help make the cyber world a better place.
