The last thing you want for your lawn irrigation system is wasted water. However, this is usually the case for lawns without a proper irrigation system.

If you’re using sprinkler irrigation, one of the most important things to consider is the type of sprinkler head to use. The sprinkler head determines the application rate of your lawn irrigation. Application rate is the amount or volume of water discharged from the sprinkler for a given time.

Spray type sprinkler heads have a higher application rate than rotor type heads and are more suitable for flat areas. Rotor sprinkler heads, on the other hand, have a lower application rate and are best for rolling landscapes. Mixing different types of sprinkler heads can result in uneven irrigation.

Another effective way to water your lawns is through drip lawn irrigation system. Drip irrigation consists of several tubes with open holes at regular intervals.

Unlike with the sprinkler systems where the water is first sprayed into the air, drip lawn irrigation system can efficiently target specific garden beds or plants thereby avoiding water wastage. The holes of the irrigation tubes can be tailored according to the spacing of your plants so you do not have to waste water on the intervening areas in between.

Drip irrigation is often used for areas where flowers and shrubs are growing. Its efficient lawn irrigation system ensures that water is not carried away elsewhere during the irrigating process thereby promoting water conservation.

When irrigating your lawn, take care not to drown your plants. It is better to water for brief periods at regular intervals to help the soil absorb the water. Watering your lawn once a day for a much longer period can result in just having the water run-off without being absorbed by the soil.

It is also best to water your lawn on mornings. Watering your lawn in the afternoon may only cause the water to evaporate while irrigating at night can encourage the growth of fungus since the leaves remain wet overnight.
