The popularity of digital video recorders soared with the advent of bigger TV screens and high definition TV. People began opting to record movies digitally booting out the old VHS method.

DVR recorders allow you the freedom to watch what you really want and when to watch your preferred shows or movies. These time recorders can be programmed to automatically record even when you’re not home.

Unlike VHS recording, DVR recorders can hold longer recording hours and provide better quality. Digital video recordings are also more durable and can resist wear and tear even after video editing.

There are two kinds of DVR recorders – the DVD-based recorder and the hard-disk based recorder.

DVD-based digital video recorders store your data using DVD discs that you can play later. They can also play your rented and borrowed DVD movies. This type of recorder is advisable if you want to archive your recordings for future use or if you’re more familiar recording using a VCR.

In the meantime, you can also have an infrared blaster attached to your DVD recorder. This will allow you to record several channels without manually changing the channel in the cable box.

A PVR or personal video recorder, on the other hand, digitally records to a hard disk similar to the one in your computer. While a PVR cannot play DVDs, it gives you a significantly bigger recording space than DVD-based recorders. Most PVRs are capable of recording more than 100 gigabytes and can record two shows simultaneously.

There are new DVR recorders in the market however, that already combine a DVD and a PVR. These recorders offer the best of both worlds by providing a hard drive storage while allowing DVD viewing at the same time. They also give you the option to transfer your hard drive recording to DVD for archiving.

Whatever type of time recorders you think suits you best, DVR recorders definitely reduce your storage area. Unlike VHS cassettes that take up several drawers to store, digital video recording can free up to two-thirds of your old storage space giving you more room for more movies.
