Water filters are devices that are used to improve the overall quality of drinking water including smell, appearance, and even chemical substances. Different kinds of water filters are available depending on where you intend to use them such as well water filters, house water filters, and shower water filters.

Generally, water filters can be classified into two categories: point-of-use water filters and point-of-entry water filters.

Point-of-use filters are often smaller units that are directly installed on single and/or multiple taps or in pitcher units. Point-of-use devices are also used for refrigerators such as Maytag water filters. Different models of Maytag refrigerators use different types Maytag water filters. Some Maytag water filters are used to make filtered ice while others remove all contaminants and can filter up to 400 gallons of water.

Another form of point-of-use filter is pitcher filters, which are ideal if you only need filtered water occasionally. With pitcher filters, water is poured at the top portion of the jug. The water then flows through an internal filter into the main container. The process is slow and usually takes several minutes for water to filter through.

Faucet-mounted and under-the-sink filters on the other hand, are directly installed on your tap. Some faucet-mounted filters allow water to be diverted when you want to use ordinary water instead of the filtered one. Meanwhile, under-the-sink filters are often larger and normally come with individual taps or faucets. They are relatively more durable than other point-of-use filters.

Point-of-entry filters on the other hand, are usually in the form of whole house water filter systems and are usually installed on the main water supply to treat all the water entering the house. The principle used for point-of-entry water filters is the same as point-of-use devices, but point-of-entry devices are designed bigger to treat larger volumes of water.
