Artificial turf grass was created in 1960 and was used mainly for sports arenas like football, baseball, and even golf. Today, artificial turf is fast becoming popular for commercial and residential applications.

Artificial turf grass is ideal for roof gardens, swimming pools, muddy lawns, garden centers, and balconies among other things. Artificial turf installation is easy and can be done by simply following do-it-yourself instructions.

The synthetic grass can be applied on almost any type of surface like concrete and asphalt. It can be also installed on top of real soil to appear like natural turf as well as indoor gardens where natural turf may be difficult to grow.

The base of artificial turf grass is porous thereby allowing rainwater or any liquid substance to drain through to the bottom of the grass surface. Artificial turf is also be maintained like natural turf. Dirt and leaves can be swept or blown away. Any animal feces on the surface should also be scooped and the artificial turf washed afterwards.

Artificial turf grass last much longer than natural turf and is easier to maintain since it does not require watering or cutting. This makes it ideal for vacation homes where owners don’t have the time to maintain the lawn or for retirement homes where the residents are too old to keep the garden grass low.

There are certain drawbacks to the product however. Some artificial turf grasses require silicon sand or granulated rubber infill for installation which can produce an unpleasant odor. The infill materials also carry heavy metals that may leak into the water table.

Artificial grass of sports arenas also needs to be disinfected after every game since the fibers don’t absorb body fluids like natural grass. A medical condition called turf toe is also usually associated with playing on synthetic grass. It is also more painful to fall on artificial turf than on a natural one since it does not yield as easily.
