A ceramic water filter is among the many types of filter that are usually used in households. It purifies water by passing it through pores that are made of ceramic by gravitational dripping or by pressure from tap water.

Ceramic water filters have been developed especially for developing countries since they are cost-efficient and require low maintenance. The filters should be changed or cleaned frequently to avoid development of bacteria levels in the water.

Some ceramic water filters use MSR water filtration system. MSR water filters are cost-effective, easy-to-use, lightweight, and compact. The activated carbon filter inside the pump gets rid of chemicals including pesticides, iodine, and chlorine in the water.

There are generally four types of household pure water filters – distillers, reverse osmosis, activated carbon, and backwash water filters.

Water distillers heat water until it evaporates leaving behind bacteria, minerals, and other substances in the water. The evaporated water is then cooled and condenses back to a relatively pure form of water.

Reverse osmosis, on the other hand, forces water against an ultra-fine and semi-permeable membrane where only single molecules of water can pass through. Unlike distillers though, oxygen can pass through the membrane which results in better-tasting water. Reverse osmosis water filters were originally created to desalinate salt water.

Activated carbon filters are used to treat any taste and odor problems in drinking water as well as remove chlorine residue by letting the carbon absorb the dirt and any unwanted particles in the water. Activated carbon filters can also remove some pesticide residues and are considered one of the best ways to eliminate certain organic chemicals.

There are several sizes of activated carbon filters. Some are small enough to fit directly into the kitchen tap while some are installed under the sink or connected directly to the water line.

Activated carbon filters allow beneficial minerals to pass through. They are also inexpensive and ensure a high standard of water filtration making them one of the most widely used water filters today.
