What Is a Harddrive and Why It Fails

Your computer stores your data on its harddrive. The data is written to a magnetic disk similar to a CD but with much more data per square centimeter. A mechanism rotates and reads this disk at hundreds of kilometers per hour, and a magnetic needle writes data to the disk at thousands of bytes per second. In music players and some laptops, the harddrive is the only remaining moveable part of the entire system.

As a mechanical device, the harddrive is particularly susceptible to impact. Dropping a harddrive or hitting it with force may cause the harddrive needle to misalign or, if it was running, to shatter and scatter dust over the sensitive disk. Besides physical impact and water or fire damage, the harddrive may be partially erased or corrupted when a strong magnetic force rearranges the data on the disk.

Recovering Your Harddrive

There are many freeware programs available to assist the tech-savvy in harddrive data recovery. These programs expect the user to own a second, working, remote computer from the damaged harddrive and to be able to make an independent connection from the remote computer to the damaged harddrive. Such programs are most useful when recovering data from a harddrive whose operating or file system has been damaged through system overwriting.

While most desktop computer harddrives may be removed with a screwdriver by a determined user, laptops should be brought in whole to their respective manufacturers. [Laptop data recovery] is tricky business as many of the components are interlaced with other elements of the unit.

Data Recovery Companies

If your harddrive was erased or corrupted by a magnet or physical damage has been done to the drive, a [data recovery company] whose sophisticated physical- and software-based tools remain the safest and most successful in harddrive data recovery may be your only option. These firms demand hefty fees from clients however and are mostly available in urban areas (see [data recovery ny], [data recovery los angeles], [data recovery houston], [data recovery austin])

Recovery Prevention

An ounce of prevention is always more valuable than a pound of cure, and the best way to get back your data is to back-up securely and regularly. Harddrive data recovery is by no means a sure science, and many times months-old back-up files are better than starting from scratch. The future may see the replacement of the traditional harddrive with more sturdy flash memory, but until then, make sure to back-up your valuable data!
