CPUs or Central Processing Units have been in continuous evolution since computers were created. All CPUs contain processors that serve as the very brain of the system. The speed of computer CPUs is highly dependent on the kind of processor it uses. Thus, new versions of processors are released from time to time to make sure that they keep up with the needs of users.

Intel Xeon processors are among the most popular and trusted processors found in most CPUs. Xeon is the brand name used by Intel to label its microprocessors that are designed for multiple-processor machines. The name has been used and maintained over several generations of processors.

Xeon processors in general have more cache and are more capable of supporting several computer units. Hence, they are more commonly used for industrial and commercial applications.

The Pentium III Xeon processor was released in 1999. The only difference between a Pentium II and a Pentium III Xeon processor is the addition of Streaming SIMD Extensions or SSE and a built-in random number generator together with a few cache controller enhancements. Except for a few applications like graphic workstations however, the additions were not useful for most standard file and print server functions.

On the other hand, it was noted that the second version of Pentium III Xeon was no different from its desktop edition thereby prompting the release another version.

The bus speed of the third version of Pentium III Xeon was finally fixed at 100MT/s, which is the minimum bus speed needed by computer CPUs using 4, 8 or more processors.

Xeon processors were created to boost the performance of CPUs and meet the ever-growing demand of business industries. Intel Xeon processors continue to advance in providing high quality servers to make sure that businesses remain competitive. After all, responsiveness, dependability, and efficiency are the things that make computer CPUs indispensable to the business world.
