You may think that since your child in college is young and in good physical health, there's no need to get a college health insurance. But then being young does not shield your child from any serious illness or injury. In fact, college years can be physically and emotionally straining. It is during this time when students become more daring to engage in some high-risk activities or participate in more strenuous sports; the temptation to use drugs and drinking alcohol may also aggravate the situation. Hence, you should never take for granted the health risks involved.

Before you send your child to a university, you should consult your health insurance provider as to whether your college-bound student will be covered under your health insurance plan, or if it would be more appropriate to purchase a health insurance for college students. Note that most insurers set an age limit of family members who are covered under your business or personal health policy. And in case your child is attending college or university outside the state where you live or work, it may not be possible for your child to access the services while away at college.

In case you may have to get another plan for your child, you must inquire at the college or university where your child intends to attend the extent of their health insurance for college students. Most colleges and universities in the country provide health insurance for college students for a reasonable fee.

This coverage may even be cheaper and more convenient than your existing health insurance plan as colleges and universities can negotiate for better deals with health insurance carrier because of their groups' size. You may also want to know also if the institution would automatically bill the premiums of the health insurance for college students together with the tuition fees.
