Matress pads have become necessary to use on any type of beds for personal comfort, protection of mattress from soiling and moisture, and improvement of air circulation. These are washable items which make them easier to clean and sanitize than the mattress itself.

You may find it difficult to decide which one among the available matress pads in the market is the right choice for you. They vary widely in the level of comfort that they can give, their intended purposes, their designs and the materials from which they are made. Cotton, natural or synthetic latex, down feather, memory foam and lamb wool are some of the matress pads' popular materials.

You may find wool mattress pads appropriate if you suffer from allergies because they don't attract mold spores, moisture and dust mites. Magnetic pads are said to help give a more comfortable sleep but you should not use them for long hours. Other types of matress pads models include waterproof, heated electric, and memory foam.

You may find matress pads to be either fitted or non-fitted. The elasticized sides on fitted matress pads provide good fit because these wrap the pads securely around the corners of the mattress. Flat or non-fitted matress pads may require you to make your bed every after you slept on them because they don't have any elastic bands for a secure fit.

Before you shop for matress pads, you need to determine the size or dimension of your mattress. You would not buy an item which you may not be able to use later. And always ensure that the matress pads have passed the mattress standard set by the consumer product safety commission. This standard seeks to minimize the hazards to yourself or your property in case the mattress catches fire due to various causes, like cigarettes.
