If you plan to go overseas and intend to remain connected, then you might want to get international cell phone service. There are two different options you can utilize to obtain this service: using your own international cell phone or availing of international cell phone rentals.

1. Using your own Phone
If your phone is a tri-band international phone, meaning it can work in three different frequencies, then you can use your phone internationally. You can then either ask your local service provider to activate your international roaming service or you can buy a SIM card at your destination. International roaming service is costly, but the advantage is that other people will be able to contact you using your own number. Buying a SIM card at your destination, on the other hand, is a cheaper way of making local calls and allows you to utilize the features of the local network. However, your phone should first be unlocked to allow other SIM cards to be used in it. Also, if you plan to call someone from your country, you will still have to pay the international rates.

2. Renting a Phone
If you travel occasionally, and do not have your own international phone, then international cell phone rentals may just be for you. There are many companies providing international cell phone rentals in different countries, and their rates vary; in general, renting a phone is an expensive option, since you have to pay a middle man. Some of these companies also have a cell phone leasing option. If you travel regularly and expect to rent a phone multiple times, then it may be cheaper for you to just buy your own phone. Also, most rental phones have only few essential features; thus, if you want an up-to-date phone with power tools, you should consider buying your own international phone than renting one.
