A domain name provides your website with an address. The first step to owning a domain name is finding one that is available. Do a "who is" search to find out what domain names are already taken. “Who is” searches are usually available in the websites of domain name registrars.

Once you’ve picked an available domain name, you have to know how to register a domain name through a domain name registrar. Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and web hosts register your domain name for free, but they make your domain name an extension of their domain name.

These are the steps that will guide you on how to register a domain name:
1. First, choose an accredited domain name registrar, and go to their website.
2. Enter your chosen name on the registrar’s website. This will inform you if your chosen domain name is available or is currently in use.
3. Choose the number of years you are willing to pay to keep your domain name. The number of years and the cost depend on which registrar you choose. You usually save a little money if you pay to keep your domain name for a longer time. Payment is usually by credit card. When your domain name is about to expire, you have again to pay for the renewal.
4. Input your contact information. There are four types of contacts, namely the owner, the technical, the billing and the administrative. The administrative and/or technical contacts are needed to approve the transfer of a domain name out of a web host. You can use one name for all of these contacts.
5. Some registrars offer an option of private or public registration. Private registration protects your identity and decreases the amount of SPAM you get, but is more expensive.
6. Some registrars also ask for your web host’s primary and secondary nameservers. The information is usually available in the FAQs.
7. If you already have a website, direct your domain to your web server, which is provided by your web host.
8. If you have not built a website yet, you can “park” your domain name with the registrar. They provide you with a temporary website so that you can ensure that your domain name will not be used while you are building your site.
9. Some registrars give you a free e-mail address at your own domain name.

These are the steps on how to register a domain name. It may take any time from a few hours to a couple of days before your domain name becomes active. You can also buy other domain names or use domain name forwarding to redirect common misspellings and variations of your domain name to your site.
