Antistatic devices are materials that lessen or eliminate static electricity build-up. Static electricity is produced by an accumulation of electrical charges that do not move and remain on the surfaces of objects. Static electricity does not necessarily lead to damage; however, they can cause collections of dust that may eventually affect your product’s performance, or give you electrical shock. They can also lead to the more dangerous electrostatic discharge, or sparks, which may eventually cause fires or explosions.

These antistatic devices are created by treating the surface of the material with antistatic agents, or incorporating these agents into the material. By drawing moisture from the atmosphere, these agents make the surface slightly conductive, and thus, dissipate the static electricity. However, they can only inhibit triboelectric charges, or charges that result from friction or when you rub things together. Also, since they draw moisture from air, they are less effective when the humidity in your environment is low.

Antistatic devices provide limited static protection compared to insulators. Some devices also tend to have their antistatic coating rubbed off in time, and are thus not permanently antistatic.

There are numerous antistatic devices available in the market. These include, but are not limited to, carpets, floor wax, wristbands, bags, sprays, even lotions.

Also available are antistatic films and antistatic film cleaners. These prevent the accumulation of dust on your films, and subsequent damage and data loss. Some film cleaners have extractor fans and brushes that absorb the dust particles.

Anti static mats can help you when repairing a computer or other electronic devices. These anti static mats absorb the electricity, preventing destruction to your device’s electronic parts. Anti static mats are also known as grounding mats.

Plastic materials, which are the most common generators of static electricity, are now also available as anti-static plastics.

Military jet fuels have also benefited from antistatic technology. Static charge can result in sparking, which may result in ignited fuel vapors. By making the fuel electrically conductive, you can avoid the buildup of static charge.
