Medical alarms are electronic devices that alert the user’s contacts when the emergency button is pressed. Depending on the brand, they can resemble bracelets, watches or mobile phones, among others. Costs also vary.

Medical alarm systems are composed of a medical alert terminal with a transmitter button connected to the user, and a medical alarm monitoring center connected to medical personnel or other emergency contacts. This system is usually a wireless tracker or an emergency telephone system. In case of an emergency, you can press the emergency button and an alarm will instantly send a signal to warn a medical operator of the situation.

Medical alarms are monitored all day. Depending on your programmed settings, paramedics or your family or friends will be sent to you. The telephone operator will assist you until your help arrives.

Medical alarms were initially designed to help the elderly, especially those who choose to live independently. An alarming number of seniors experience an emergency without help at hand. Emergency situations among the elderly are attributed to decreased physical and/or mental abilities. These situations may be addressed if you use senior medical alarms.

Medical alarms have also been adapted to babies, specifically the wander medical alert, which has a movement sensor. You can map out the safe area for your baby, and when your baby moves out of it, the alarm is activated. However, such a system will still not be able to address all the emergency needs of your baby, and is thus, still not foolproof.

Medical alarms may also be helpful in children, teenagers and pregnant women. If you are living alone, especially in an unsafe neighborhood, or have recently been hospitalized, and or are using orthopedic devices, medical alarms may also be of benefit to you. Medical alarms have also been known to help in a number of other diseases, including epilepsy, amnesia, slight mental retardation, and drug abuse after initial rehabilitation.
