Your typical mattress is made up of a petroleum-based foam covered in polyester fabric. After years of use, your mattress will eventually breakdown and will end up generating toxic dust and formaldehyde gas. This breakdown is harmful to your health and can cause life-threatening illnesses, such as cancer. This kind of mattress also contains a chemical used as a fire retardant, which can accumulate in the body and cause serious health problems, including learning disabilities. This alarming increase in blood levels of the said chemical has led to its banning in a number of places.

The need to find a healthier alternative to the typical mattress resulted to the creation of the organic mattress. These mattresses are actually the kind used before the petrochemical industry started.

There are different kinds of organic mattresses. These include:
• Organic cotton and wool batting innerspring mattress
• Natural latex mattress
• Organic cotton, wool and latex mattress (also known as luxury mattress)
• Organic cotton mattress

In these mattresses, the fire retardant chemical was replaced with wool, which is a natural fire retardant, and latex, which comes from rubber and thus, does not burn well. However, purely cotton mattresses, even if they do not burn well, require your physician's prescription since they do not meet the fire resistance code.

Organic mattresses, other than being health-friendly, also have other advantages over petroleum-based mattresses. Organic mattresses take away moisture coming from your body, preventing night sweats and decreasing the chances of fungal infection, such as athlete’s foot. Wool mattresses have also been known to regulate your body temperature, and results to a more relaxed sleep. Wool, along with latex, is also mite-resistant, and is especially beneficial if you have allergies to dust mites. Organic cotton and latex are also considered as hypoallergenic materials, and are appropriate for your baby or child.
