Technology has made it possible for a patient’s medical records to be stored in digital form and to be retrieved and shared using a computer network. This allows different medical providers to gain access and edit a patient’s records when necessary, making the records updated and more manageable.

This digitized record is known as an electronic health record, or EHR. An EHR is a comprehensive collection of information of your patient’s health, as seen from various medical conditions, laboratory examinations and treatments. The perfect EHR software has not yet been created.

One of the subsets of an EHR is the electronic medical record, or EMR. Although a single person usually creates and manages a patient’s EMR, other medical personnel are able to access the file when needed. Along with your patient’s personal and health information, a medical EMR also allows you to schedule appointments, process payments, fees and insurance, input recommendations from evidence-based sources, and set reminders for your patients.

Basically, there are two ways in which you can digitize your medical records. You can either scan previously existing medical records and save them in a computer or fill in a computerized database with necessary medical information.

There have been numerous issues concerning the change from handwritten medical records to medical EMRs. Interoperability is serious concern, since not all EMR softwares are compatible. This can hinder some health providers from gaining access to your patient’s EMR. Privacy is also an issue, since any number of people can access your patient’s information at multiple sites. You should thus employ security measures to guard your patient’s records. You are also required to update your files regularly and convert them to the current EMR formats available.

There are different medical EMR systems in the market; most of these systems can be customized to fit your practice needs and medical specialty. You can also find EMR systems that do not have templates, allowing you to personalize your own EMR. Prices typically depend on the features your EMR system contains.
