Drug rehabilitation is a process of combined medical and psychiatric treatment to stop a user’s dependency and/or abuse of psychoactive substances, including alcohol, prescription drugs and/or illicit drugs. Drug rehabilitation centers generally view rehabilitation as a lifetime process.

Christian rehabilitation centers are institutions that utilize a faith-based approach to help in the rehabilitation or management of drug or alcohol abusers. These centers typically incorporate medical, psychiatric and spiritual techniques to help you overcome your addiction.

One of the principles behind Christian rehabilitation centers is that once your body becomes dependent on a certain substance, the most effective way for you to stop is by focusing on God as a higher power that wants you to change.

As in regular drug rehabilitation centers, detoxification is the first step to management of an addict. Christian rehabilitation centers promote Christian detoxification, which combines physical and spiritual methods of detoxification to cleanse both the body and the soul. This form of detoxification helps manage withdrawal symptoms in a spiritual manner.

After detoxification, treatment is instituted. A number of Christian rehabilitation centers use the twelve-step program, which states that recovery from addiction can be achieved by following twelve steps. Part of these steps is admitting that you are powerless and that, by reviewing your faults and changing your habits, a higher power can rid you of the addiction. This is achieved via a number of spiritual activities, such as prayer, meditation and bible study sessions.

The other functions of Christian rehabilitation centers are similar to other rehabilitation centers. These include medical treatment, lifestyle changes, individual counseling, group therapy, family therapy, and patient education, among others.
