There are various ways to get in touch with your family or friends abroad. One of the cheaper options is to use a prepaid international calling card.

A prepaid international calling card is a kind of phone card containing a certain amount of credits, which you pay for in advance. The credits correspond to a specific amount of long distance connection time. Your international calling fees, such as the connection fee and the duration of connection, are deducted from the original card value. The card can no longer be used once the value remaining is not enough to continue the call or make a new call.

You can buy prepaid international calling cards at convenience stores, shopping malls, gas stations and on the Internet. When buying a card, look for one with the best rates. Take into account the per-minute rate, connection and maintenance fees, tariffs, round-offs and surcharges, among others. If you want to make a lot of short calls, find a card with minimal or no connection fee. If you want to make a few long calls, find a card with low rates per minute.

The card almost always comes with instructions on how to call. Typically, it requires you to dial the access number, enter the card’s PIN number and then dial the number you are trying to reach. Usually, after you dial your destination, you will be told the amount of credits remaining in your card. If you experience any problems, you can call the company’s customer service and ask for a replacement.

Prepaid international calling cards typically offer lower rates than regular phone lines. Most of these cards allow you to use any kind of phone when calling. Another advantage of prepaid international calling cards is that you are able to control the amount of money you spend on calls. You’ll never have to be surprised with a huge phone bill again!
