Market research companies conduct researches to check if a company’s advertising campaigns work and to explore the most effective ways to advertise to a certain group of people. This is done by making people test products, do mystery shopping, join focus group discussions and answer paid surveys.
Countless paid surveys are available online, typically paying a few dollars per survey, which takes a few minutes to complete. Payment may also be via goods, services, coupons or “points” that are redeemable to cash or kind. Some sites even offer incentives as soon as you sign up.
Initially, you are asked to fill out a form about yourself so that the company can screen which surveys are compatible with your interests and which you can participate in. In legitimate marketing firms, this information is classified, and is not revealed without your consent.
Marketing companies then send you an e-mail when your participation is desired. You can either accept the invitation or ignore it.
However, not all internet sites that promise payment do pay. You are more likely to stumble upon online survey scams promoting easy money than honest marketing research. These scams usually guarantee that you will get paid for surveys, but only after paying a certain amount of money. Some “middleman” sites ask for a “membership” fee in exchange for a directory or database of companies that allow you to get paid for surveys, which are actually available for free online.
To avoid these scams and to get paid for surveys, it is essential that you read all the fine print on the site. A background check on the company may also be worthwhile, including checking if the site was registered by proxy. Also, check scam forums and sites for complaints from users. Note that if a site was not mentioned in any of these forums, it does not necessarily mean that the site is a legitimate site which allows you to get paid for taking surveys.
Because of the increasing number of complaints regarding paid survey scams, legislation is currently being processed to respond to this form of fraud.
