A dehumidifier is a household appliance used to decrease the humidity in a room. There are two basic types of dehumidifiers, namely mechanical or refrigerative and dessicant.
Mechanical or refrigerative dehumidifiers use a fan to draw moist air in your surroundings over a refrigerated metal coil. By lowering the temperature of the air, the water contained in air condenses, which is collected in a bucket or to a connected drain. The air will then be reheated as it passes through the warmer side of the coil, and will then be released back to you. A sensor detects when the bucket is full, and an alarm is activated.
Meanwhile, dessicant dehumidifiers use a fan to draw moist air in your surroundings through a holder that contains the dessicant material, which has a high affinity to water vapor. The moisture content in a dessicant material is dependent on the level of humidity in the air. When the high humidity air passes through the dessicant material, the material retains some of the water vapor contained in the air. A heater then heats air to produce a lower humidity air. Another fan then moves this lower humidity air through the dessicant material, so that the air can draw the moisture from the dessicant material. Once the dessicant material loses the moisture, it can again start another cycle of dehumidification of your surrounding air.
Santa Fe dehumidifiers are refrigerative dehumidifiers for home and light commercial use. They have capacities of approximately a hundred pints a day, and come equipped with condensation pumps and optional muffler kits that reduce sound. Santa Fe dehumidifiers typically have a built-in defrost system, to allow the appliance to run at lower temperatures and keep it from freezing up. Santa Fe dehumidifiers claim to reduce mold and mildew, and are especially useful in your basement and in crawl spaces. Some models also have an air filtration system installed, which can reduce allergens and air pollutants.
