Also known as communication servers, these servers allow you to gain access to files and documents on a local area network even if you are somewhere else. Remote server access is most beneficial for companies with a mobile workforce, work-at-home employees, and telecommuters.

You can gain remote server access to your company’s network in various ways. One of the most common ways is by dialing into a remote server using regular telephone lines. You can also opt to use a dedicated line from your computer to a central corporate local area network. This is a more expensive option, but delivers data faster than dial-up connections. Integrated Services Digital Network, which is typically used between company branches, can also provide remote server access. You can also utilize wireless networks, cable modem and digital subscriber lines. Some users can also use the Internet to enter the local area network and retrieve files via encryption techniques. This is known as virtual private networking.

After initiating the connection, a router forwards your request for remote server access. You will then have to wait until your identity is verified. This is known as authentication. There are different authentication protocols, including the use of passwords, smart cards and digital certificates.

One of the major problems in remote server access is security. Typically, remote servers are linked to firewalls for this purpose. Your office can also set user properties to allow access. Some offices can also opt to use caller ID verification or callback security, to ensure that a legitimate employee is trying to access the network.

Once you are connected, you can now access your company’s shared hard drives and printers. By using remote server access, users are able to experience the convenience and flexibility of working at home while increasing employee productivity.
