GOING TO THE DENTIST

IV sedation is also used for dentistry sedation, especially if the treatment will involve some invasive procedure that needs the systemic application of anesthetics.

Most people who are afraid of the dentist prefer IV sedation, even for the most minor of procedures. They would much rather be unconscious while the dentist treats their problems. Because most of these people fear that a local anesthesia will not be strong enough to numb the pain, they prefer IV sedation in all instances.

However, while IV sedation can bring about a blissful sleep, it is not always a good option. Because the anesthetics enter your blood stream and act systemically on your entire body, it could have lasting side effects such as forgetfulness. Any systemic drug can have adverse side effects, and as such, should only be used after exhausting all possible alternatives.

PREVENTION IS THE BEST DEFENSE

If you are having a simple teeth extraction, a locally applied analgesic should be good enough. Asking for IV sedation is too much in this case. Oftentimes our fear of going to the dentist is exaggerated, and the procedures are not as painful as we think they will be.

So rather than take the risks of having IV sedation for minor procedures, it will be much better if we learn to use relaxation techniques that will help us face our fears and be able to take good care of our teeth.

However, for those whose fear borders on phobia and IV sedation is the only way to administer the treatment, then care should be taken that the anesthetic drugs used would present as few risks as possible.

In the end if you are afraid of the dentist, the best way to avoid going there is to take proper care of your teeth. Take all the preventive measures that you can, and you should never have to make a choice between IV sedation or a local anesthesia.
