Dial up internet connections are the most commonly used method in connecting to the internet worldwide. This is due to the fact that dial up internet connections are cheap and reliable even though it is slow compared to the other kinds of internet connections. You can connect to the internet using dial up when you have a phone line and a fifty six kilobyte modem. Your computer will then dial the phone number provided by you internet service provider to connect to their server and log you on to the internet.

There is really no major disadvantage in using dial up internet connections since you can already use all the features available online. The only problem with this method is the speed because it can only transfer a maximum of seven kilobyte per second while other internet connections usually have three times that speed. Take note also of the fact that an average website contains fifty kilobytes so you will need at least seven seconds before the page can load in your computer.

Despite its setbacks though, dial up internet connections are still popular up to this date because it is very cost effective and readily accessible. In addition, some phone lines already come with this package so this service is already inclusive in your monthly phone bill. Automated dialing is possible in some operating systems because it is already included in the file script. This feature makes it easier to retrieve and send files to a remote server.

However, some people choose not to use dial up internet connections because you cannot use your phone when you are connected to the internet. So they avail of broadband or cable connections instead in order to have faster data transfer and an available phone line. But they also rely on dial up internet connections in case their broadband connection is unavailable since dial up internet connection is readily available as long as you have a modem and a phone line.
