GFCI is an acronym that stands for ground fault circuit interrupter. A Cutler Hammer GFCI safeguards individuals from experiencing electric shocks that may lead to body tissue damage. A Cutler Hammer GFCI blocks off any electricity flow that moves within the circuit when there is an irregular flow of electricity. A Cutler Hammer GFCI also prevents damage to the electrical wiring of a particular place.

A Cutler Hammer GFCI differs from a Cutler Hammer circuit breaker. Cutler Hammer circuit breakers work by preventing electrical power overloads. Cutler Hammer also recently introduced the AFCI/GFCI circuit breaker in the market. This device does not only safeguard an individual from electrocution, but also protects a place against fires caused by faulty electrical wiring.

Adequate knowledge on the installation of electrical wiring system is strongly recommended for individuals who wish to install a Cutler Hammer GFCI independently.

A GFCI needs to be installed in each power outlet that you use. The power of the circuit where the GFCI is to be installed should be switched off. An electrical tester should be used on the power outlet to ensure that power is switched off.

The cover plate of an electrical outlet should be taken out by unscrewing the cover plate.

Within the outlet you will notice several wires, which should be taken out in a certain order. The black or hot wire should be taken out first by removing the screw that holds it. The neutral or white wire should then be taken out next, followed by the ground wire.

Both the neutral and ground wires should be stripped off by less than an inch leaving the bare wire exposed. The hot wire should be left untouched.

An installation guide is normally included in the GFCI unit that you purchase. This will provide you a more detailed guide on where to attach the relevant wires. Once all the wires have been secured on the pertinent screws, you must then return the wires to the electrical box. Ensure that the ground wire is kept far from the neutral and hot wires. The electrical box should then be returned to the wall outlet, and the cover plate by securing it with the screws. The circuit breaker can then be switched back on.
