What is Cerebral Palsy and Its Common Victims?

Cerebal palsy is a disability related to controlling of muscle due to impaired development of the brain either during gestation, birth and early child development. This is the reason why children are the most common victims of cerebral palsey disorder. Involuntary movements are the common symptoms of cerebral palsy.

Symptoms and Side Effects

Children suffering from cerebal palsy are weak, awkward, slow, and shaky and unbalance in their psychomotor development. Parents might not easily recognize the symptoms of cerebal palsy at an early age particularly if it’s only mild given that the symptoms are commonly associated with normal child development. Worst cases of cerebal palsy cause blindness, deafness and epilepsy depending on the area and extent of the brain damage.

Types of Cerebral Palsy

Spastic, athetoid and ataxic are the common types of cerebral palsy. Spastic cerebal palsy is the most common with symptoms related to muscle rigidity. The transmission of brain message to the muscle is slow thus the reason for rigidity. Normally, muscle groups move both tightly and relax during physical movement. However, muscles in cases of cerebal palsy are tight making movement difficult.

Athetoid cerebal palsy is the one where a person suffering from cerebral palsy manifests involuntary movements. He does not have control over his movement due to the imbalance in brain functioning. Children suffering from athetoid cerebal palsy are limp and soft due to the weakness in their muscles.

Unsteadiness and shakiness in movements characterize ataxic cerebral palsy. This is due to low level of muscle tone and coordination. Children suffering from this type of cerebral palsy will have longer time carrying out their movements and tasks like speech and writing. There are scarce cases of ataxic cerebral palsy compared to the other two types already discussed.

There are also cases of mixed cerebral palsy where the one suffering manifests mixed symptoms associated with two or more types of cerebral palsy. Usually spastic and athetoid types manifest in a child suffering with cerebal palsy. Sometimes manifested first are the symptoms of spastic cerebal palsy followed by athetoid symptoms.
