Volatile and Non-Volatile Electronic Data Storage

Electronic data storage is requires the use of electricity to store and retrieve data. The medium of data storage are either volatile or not volatile memory. Memory is a term used referring to all electronic data storage. It is a medium designed to hold data. Data storage in volatile memory is lost in the absence of electrical power while non volatile memory retains its data in the absence of electrical power for a certain period.

Magnetic Medium Devices

Non volatile medium is either magnetic, magneto optic, optic and solid state. Magnetic medium is the most common medium used in non volatile data storage nowadays. Floppy disc, zip disc, hard disc and tapes are types of magnetic electronic data storage devices. Floppy disc and zip disc are limited to store data for an average of five years before it become corrupted due to environmental factor. Hard discs are limited to a life span of five years since its mechanical component might go wrong in that period. Tapes are created of higher standard, thus, it is expected to last longer.

Magneto Optic Devices

Magneto optic electronic data storage devices offer longer and reliable storage compared to magnetic devices. It is considered a hybrid technology that offers read-write capability. However, it has limited distribution and usage in the current market.

Optic Devices

CD-ROM and DVDs comprise optic electronic data storage devices. These discs are developed optically with the use of laser to help reading and writing into the disc easier and reliable. Drives accommodating usage of these devices are common in the market nowadays, hence, it is has become the most common electronic data storage device used by many. Also, it’s sturdier than magnetic medium devices.

Solid State Devices

USB memory stick is a type of solid state electronic data storage device that has been developed due to the emergence of digital cameras. It is used as replacement for floppy disc due to its higher memory capacity. Performance of memory sticks vary according to sizes and prices. It can retain data for an average of five years as long as it’s properly taken cared of.

Present market used these various devices depending on purpose, cost and maintenance. Thus, these devices are all available in the market today. However, patronage depends on its affordability and accessibility in terms of electronic data collection.
