Brief Background of AARP

AARP, which stands for American Association of Retired Persons, was founded by a retired high school principal back in 1958. Originally it was created to answer to the insurance needs of retired schoolteachers, which at the time was unavailable to seniors.

With productive aging as its philosophy, AARP has since evolved into a multi-faceted service organization which provides not only insurance packages but also general information and assistance of any kind to persons aged 50 and above.

AARP currently has over 35 million members in the United States, and 40,000 outside of the country. Since citizenship nor retirement status are not requirements for membership, only the abbreviation AARP is used today.

Types of AARP Insurance Packages

Affiliations with various private insurance companies have enabled AARP to provide quality insurance services for all types of needs.

AARP life insurance is provided through a tie-up with New York Life, and offers whole and term life insurance plans with affordable premiums on a group life program basis. Members as well as their spouses are eligible and it takes only minutes to buy coverage.

Metropolitan Life Insurance underwrites AARP's long-term care insurance package, which provides you with choices of hospice or home care as well as qualified caregivers and advisors. Members can also buy personal health as well as Medicare supplemental insurance coverage.

Through a unique dental program with Delta Dental Insurance, AARP helps members save on dental costs, though coverage is not yet available nationwide.

There are also AARP insurance packages to protect your properties. AARP homeowners insurance is available through Hartford Insurance, where premiums are based on loss history of all AARP policyholders and expected claims from AARP. However, the AARP auto insurance program is not a group policy, and depends upon specific individual factors such as driving history, violations and accident records, and type, use and age of vehicle. As a member, you also get a special discount when you enroll in AARP's Driver Safety Program.

There are no local agents selling AARP insurance packages, but you can contact toll-free numbers or check out the AARP sites for the type of insurance you need. The main site can also assist you in registering for membership, as well as provide free information on lifestyle, consumer, legislative and other issues that may be of interest to you and other seniors.
