If you are involved in building commissioning or maintenance services, you will find good uses for portable data loggers. You can use portable data loggers for gathering various data relevant to the operation of a building including, amperage and voltage, indoor air quality, lighting levels, flows, temperatures and many more. Portable data loggers allow engineering and energy service professionals to evaluate how well building equipment and systems are operating as a whole.

Portable data loggers are small electronic devices. Since they are battery-powered and lightweight, you can use them for monitoring and portable data collection. You can easily install, set up, and remove portable data loggers without becoming too disruptive on the building occupants. Despite their size, the more advanced models have the capability to store thousands of data readings, and you can program them to collect data at any interval, starting from two-second intervals up to 12 hours.

You usually find two basic types of these portable data collection devices. There are portable data loggers with integrated sensors and those that have separate sensors. The latter type also breaks down into single-channel data loggers and multi-channel units with several portable data terminals. The single channel devices can collect only one type of data at a time, whereas the multi-channel models to collect several types of input simultaneously.

To facilitate your data analysis, portable data loggers come with user-friendly software that allows you to download your collected data into a personal computer for analysis. This combined data logger plus software package is often called a portable data acquisition system. The associated software should be able to present collected data in time series graphs; more sophisticated software may compare two parameters. Most of the accompanying software permits several lines of data to be plotted on one graph, which enables you to do simultaneous analysis of many variables.
