The 1979 deregulation of the US air transport sector has resulted in a shake-out of the industry. Donations to partner charities that include not-for-profit organizations and national parks, purchases through the use of credit and debit cards, dining at partner restaurants around the country, using financial services from partner providers, staying at hotel participants around the globe, and using facilities of many other partners of American Airline Advantage program are some means of earning miles through non-travel related partners.

You will also earn miles in your international flights (selected destinations) from at least twenty international air carrier partners. You will get more mileage points if you purchase tickets for business class, first class or premium class.

When you accumulate enough mileage points, you can redeem these for trips through American Airlines or other partner airlines. You have the option to redeem mileage for hotel stays, holiday packages, magazine subscriptions, college savings programs, retail services and car rentals. Depending on your membership, you may get privileges for automatic upgrade of accommodation, and preferred check-in and boarding.
