If you’re out to shop for the right Mexico health insurance, then you have a tough job ahead of you. Unless it’s a company-sponsored policy, the premium you pay varies according to your age, weight, and health condition.

Some Mexico health insurance companies consider your smoking habits and even ask applicants to undergo medical exams before providing you with health insurance quotes. Any pre-existing medical condition can cause your Mexican insurance company to raise your premium.

The benefits of individual health insurance in Mexico are nowhere near the benefits of job-based policies. In fact, the most difficult part of quitting a job is leaving the benefits of your Mexico health insurance behind. Add to this the fact that private Mexican insurance policies may even incur higher premiums than job-based health policies.

If you’re self-employed on the other hand, getting the right Mexico health insurance company for your employees can also prove to be a challenge. The past decades saw a shift from traditional health insurance for Mexico employees to new insurance alternatives. Among these are health maintenance organizations or HMOs, preferred provider organizations or PPOs, and point of service or POS plans.

Health maintenance organizations are the first alternatives to come where a network of medical professionals and hospitals implement cost-saving measures. However, the plan covers only the expenses incurred from doctors and hospitals in the network and expenses with specialists outside the network shall be paid directly by the employee. HMOs offer some of the lowest premiums in the market though.

Conversely, preferred provider organizations involve a pool of doctors and hospitals that agreed to give health care services to the members of the organization. They are similar to traditional Mexico health insurance policies but have different levels of coverage. PPOs are currently the most popular choice for job-based health insurance.

Point of service plans in the meantime, are also known as open-ended HMOs. Compared with HMOs however, POS plans are more flexible and you can choose a doctor outside the network and still be covered to a certain extent.

Regardless of the health policy you choose, keep in mind that your health and peace of mind are worth more than the health insurance premium you are actually paying.
