The Software Publishers Association started with less than thirty software companies as its members with the intention of lobbying their interests to policy makers. It merged with Information Industry Association to form the Software and Information Industry Association more than ten years after its inception. Both are non-profit organizations whose objectives correlate with each other that merging benefits both of their members. Its merging created a bigger group of software companies that has higher clout within the industry and towards policy makers.

The Software Publishers Association through the years developed researches that help advocate the welfare of software companies. It developed a research department that conducted surveys and gathered data for various issues related to the plight of software companies. These studies supported the various policy issues advocated by software companies.

Software Publishers Association strongly advocated against software piracy. Its research department gathered various data to support its anti software advocacy. The Software and Information Industry Association continue this advocate of Software Publishers Association until now. It works aggressively against commission of software piracy that extends its campaign outside of the United States.

It also provides increase networking among its members as well as business opportunities to its members to collaborate with each other with regards to development and distribution of software. Electronic commerce, intellectual property, privacy, encryption and taxation are issues advocated by the organization that strive to protect the rights and benefits of software companies particularly with the rising importance of computer software in commerce.

Also, the rising usage of internet led to increase threat of intellectual piracy which left uncheck will cause problems to members of Software and Information Industry Association. Piracy affects the volume of sales of its member’s software products which will be detrimental to its sustainability. That is why preventing piracy is one of the top agenda in the activities of this software association.
