STIMULATING EFFECTS

One example of a clinical massage therapy is a lymphedema massage. A lymphedema massage is a massage treatment that is administered to treat cases of fluid retention.

Lymphedema massage aims to stimulate the blood vessels through direct application of pressure to the affected area. A lymphedema massage is best administered by a medical massage therapist, who is trained to provide the prescribed massage program.

Any type of clinical massage therapy encourages fluid drainage because of its stimulating effects. However, there are different massage programs depending on the intended effects that it has on the body. The clinical massage therapy may be for relaxation, prevention of spasticity, strength improvement, and stimulation of nerves and blood vessels.

A lymphedema massage zeroes in on issues of fluid retention which can cause discomfort and decrease of range of motion for the affected limb or body part. As such, the massage may be applied perpendicular to the horizontal axis, or along the length of the involved limb.

BODY FLUID ISSUES

The occurrence of lymphedema has several causes all of which are secondary to fluid retention. Fluid retention may be due to kidney problems, high blood pressure, high salt intake, etc.

Of course having a lymphedema massage is not enough. While it may treat the problem it does not address the underlying cause. At the same time that you are having your lymphedema massage, make sure that you are treating the cause as well or your lymphedema massage will be useless because the fluid retention will keep coming back.

It might also help to watch your diet and avoid salty foods. Salt is known to attract water, and having too much of it in the body can increase the volume of water which can subsequently cause high blood pressure and so many other health complications.
