Medical assistants who need certification need to showcase the proper training and experience in order to become certified medical assistants. Certified medical assistants usually complete their education in vocational high schools, in colleges, or are trained on the job.

Depending on state laws, some institutions would have strict requirements about the qualifications of medical assistants. One of the most pertinent qualifications is the certification.

The tasks of certified medical assistants are the following:
1. assist medical practitioners particularly doctors, ophthalmologists
2. maintain smooth operational flow in clinics by performing administrative duties
3. answer telephone calls
4. schedule patient appointments
5. keep patient medical records
6. handle insurance forms

The tasks of certified medical assistants vary depending on their specialization. They may be dental assistants, anesthesia assistants, or physicians assistants. Aside from the general tasks enumerated above, certified medical assistants have specific clinical tasks.

These tasks include being able to explain medical procedures to patients, prepare patients for some medical procedures, prepare the stuff needed for some medical procedures, and assist the doctor during some medical procedures. The certified medical assistants should also be knowledgeable about instructing patients about prescriptions, collecting laboratory samples and specimens, disposing and sterilizing utensils used in medical procedures, drawing blood samples, ordering prescriptions from a pharmacy, and others which basically takes care of the patients while the doctor is not yet in the clinic.

These certified medical assistants, however, should not be asked for prescriptions as only the doctors are authorized and qualified to do that. The certified medical assistants should also not be sought to perform operations although they are allowed to prepare for or assist in the operation.

Most certified medical assistants are usually performing general duties to assist the doctors. However, with specializations, such as with ophthalmology or podiatry, the certified medical assistants are expected to conduct eyes tests, instruct patients on how to remove or clean contact lens or assist patients in making feet castings.
