The fundamental mission of any research laboratory is the production of scientific information. The scientific information generated from laboratory work in many industries become critical inputs to further product development work. To this end, many laboratories have employed lab information systems to help them become more effective.

As laboratories install new laboratory information management systems, the lab management has to make sure about involving bench personnel in the review and analysis of available applications packages and, perhaps more importantly, in defining the lab information system requirements of the laboratory. It is the bench personnel who are most intimately familiar with the research parameters that are utilized in the laboratory. They, therefore, are as critical to the formulation of lab decision rules as the business analyst is to business rules.

Many laboratory managements might be induced to implement a LIMS system in the belief that these sophisticated lab information systems will then reduce or eliminate the need for bench level supervision. This may not be the case in practice.

You will soon realize that laboratory information management systems are simply tools of research and therefore cannot supplant personnel supervision or laboratory management. On the other hand, lab information systems will provide you with completely updated, reliable, and comprehensive data on laboratory operations. The access to comprehensive and accurate scientific information enhances the quality of decision making, basing it on updated and accurate facts.

The objective of a laboratory information management installation should be to facilitate the analytical functions of bench personnel which impacts on organizational efficiency. It is therefore necessary that lab information systems must find acceptance from bench personnel. Unless they are involved from the very start, there may be some resistance instead. Very soon, bench personnel may find functionalities that need to be changed. This can lead to major revisions or disruptive behavior.
