Audience participation is always important because it is the best way to gauge if the message you are sending is getting across and through to your intended recipients. This is true regardless of the intent of the message, whether it is to encourage involvement, invoke people to take action, buy a certain product, support a certain advocacy, and so on and so forth.
In any speaking engagement, product presentation, or advertising campaign, you plan around with audience participation in mind. You want to be able to invoke some form of audience response and hopefully, active and sustained audience participation.
To do this successfully, preparation is the key. You have to know your audience before attempting to communicate with them. In order to get the audience participation that you want, you have to go into the mind of the audience and think the way they do. This way, you are able to make a highly targeted presentation that addresses the concerns and needs of your specific audience.
CALL TO PARTICIPATE
Of course it is only reasonable to generate some negative reactions. As the saying goes, you can never please anyone, no matter how hard you try. The best you can hope for is at least to be able to generate a positive audience response from at least half of them. Also, it pays to narrow down your audience or market to make it easier to target. Doing so enables you to present a highly focused strategy that has a very good chance for success.
So whether you are into advertising or sales or do regular speaking engagements, be sure to make audience participation as your ultimate goal. This is your barometer which will help you gauge whether the people you are targeting have been moved or affected by your message or not.
