SEDATION ONLY WHEN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY
Sometimes children can be very difficult to control inside a doctor’s office or hospital. This is especially true because they are afraid of medications and especially needles. In fact there are some cases wherein the child becomes really hysterical, so much so that they become a danger to themselves as well as to other people.
In such cases, sedation becomes a necessary cause of action. Pediatric sedation is administered only when absolutely necessary, if the child, in his hysteric fit, becomes a threat to himself. In most cases pediatric sedation is not necessary because some children manage to calm down after an initial fit.
THERAPEUTIC AND DIAGNOSTIC
For vaccination sessions, pediatric sedation is normally not used because once the injection has been administered the child usually calms down and collects himself. The anticipation of the injection is what makes the child panic. However, it is a different case if multiple injections are required. While you may be able to administer the first series, the second will be almost impossible to manage without pediatric sedation.
Pediatric sedation is also sometimes called for in diagnostic procedures, especially if the procedure requires that the child stay still. In a situation such as this, giving pediatric sedation before the actual process is done, when the sedative has already taken effect, is the best way to prevent any problems from occurring later on.
If your children will be undergoing some therapeutic or diagnostic procedure and you are worried that they might be difficult to control, then it might be a good idea to discuss with your child’s doctors the option of using pediatric sedation. When having a discussion, it might be a good idea to ask the possible adverse effects and the risk associated with pediatric sedation, then assess the risk if it is something work taking. If not, ask any other options that you have in this regard.
