Torque wrench is an automotive hand tool used to loosen or fasten a nut or bolt. It is tighten screws and bolts to ensure that it does not fall off in its position. There are two types of torque wrench commonly used in homes and businesses namely the beam type and the clicker type.

Beam Type Torque Wrench

Beam type torque wrench is simple, reliable and accurate. It has a long lever arm from its handle and the wrench head which is made of elastic material that will bend slightly when applied to a torque. Thus, difficulty in handling it is very minimal. You only have to apply force in the middle of its arm to fasten or loosen a bolt. Putting too much pressure on the torque might bend the beam permanently. Thus, you need to handle it carefully to make it last. Beam torques wrenches are sometimes difficult to use during situations where scales are not clear like in automotive environment.

Clicker Type Torque Wrench

Clicker torque wrench, also referred to as digital wrench, uses a calibrated clutch mechanism to preset a torque. It preloads the torque using a spring that creates a clicking sound upon releasing the ratchet to set the torque in its place.

It is more expensive compared to beam type torque wrench due to its sophistication. Consequently, it is more expensive than the beam type. However, it provides greater accuracy for users requiring lesser time to set the torque in its proper place. Varied designs are available on clicker type torque wrench that is also applicable for hydraulic torque.

Deciding which type of torque wrench is better for your need depends on the scale of work that you need a torque wrench. Simple applications can settle for beam type torque wrench while complicated applications usually involved in automotive can use clicker type torque wrench.
