You may find hand-watering as a therapeutic gardening activity. But this is a time-consuming task especially if you need to water some plants deeply. It is also hard to measure the amount of water that you have to apply. Although you may want to do hand-watering, you may be better off with some watering devices available in the market.

You can choose a portable sprinkler system or soaker, or an underground sprinkler system that has a series of sub-surface irrigation lines and fixed sprinklers. To make things convenient, you can also install a programmable Rainbird timer so your plants can have the water they need even if you are not home.

A Rainbird timer is actually a component of an automatic sprinkler system that determines the time when the valve opens and the length of time when it operates. When the set time arrives, the timer sends out a signal to the automatic valves. This low voltage signal causes the valves to open, for a predetermined duration allowing water to flow out through the sprinkler heads. The timer automatically shuts off the valve after completing the predetermined watering cycle.

Rainbird timers come in different models. You can choose a Rainbird timer that matches the number of stations you install. Some models have a built-in automatic rain sensor that shuts off the system when it is raining, helping you to save water. Depending on the complexity of your sprinkler system design, you may need to use a Rainbird timer that has one or three to four programs. You can select a battery-operated model or one that has surge protection.

Like punch clock installations, you must place a Rainbird timer in a location that is accessible to you. It is also important that you install a proper ground wire to the Rainbird timer to avoid injury from electrical shock.
