The interchange of information has become a great problem especially to businesses. The information must be sent quickly and safely to recipients so that they can do their work right away.

WHAT IS EDI?

EDI is a set of standardized format used in transferring business data. Through EDI electronic transfer, all of the information can be sent efficiently, reducing human error and also eliminating the use of papers.

All of the important business documents such as: sales orders, official receipts, purchase orders to name a few.

Currently, there are two major EDI standards used in US and other territories. Both are proven to increase the productivity of a company by quickly transmitting large amount of information.

EDI MAPPING

There are applications in the market that use the EDI technology to combine it with other data formats. The main use of the application is to exchange information from a company to another even though only one of them has invested in the EDI technology.

It is a difficult task and usually costs a lot of money to develop such applications because programmers need to have an in-depth understanding of the data formats being used by the company.

In the development stage of the application, they need to use a method called EDI mapping so that they can relate a simple business document such as sales order into an EDI standard.

EDI mapping cuts down the job of the programmers so they can focus on other issues in the development of the application.

HOW INFORMATION IS SENT THOURH EDI?

A sender must translate its business document into an EDI standard. Afterwards, the information is sent using value added network or VAN. The information must be translated again into a format that the receiver can understand so that the receiver can make use of it.
