Acid heartburn is one of the common discomfort affecting millions of people. It is caused by acid in the stomach which makes its way up to the esophagus region which burns vital organs.

Normally, when we swallow food, the muscle which acts as a passage way to the stomach, opens so that food can enter the stomach then closes afterwards to prevent anything from going up to the esophagus. When this muscle is weakened, there is a chance that acid will go up to the esophagus causing acid heartburn. Other than the burning sensation that you may feel, acid heartburn can also lead to a more serious health problem like internal bleeding, ulcer, asthma or even cancer.

Prevention is still better than cure. Because of this reason, it is better to do preventative measures so that you can get rid of heartburn from happening.

AVOID CERTAIN FOODS AND DRINKS

There are certain foods and drinks that can lead to acid heartburn. Foods that are rich in citric acid like oranges and grapes should be out of your food list. Caffeinated beverages, dairy products and foods rich in fats should also be avoided.

EAT LIGHT MEALS FREQUENTLY

Having a heavy stomach can put pressure to your lower esophagus which increases the chance that the food is pushed upward to the esophagus region. Also, having an empty stomach can lead to other health problems because the stomach does not stop digesting even though it is empty. To be in the safe side, eat light meals frequently.

STAY FIT

Studies show that obesity can cause heartburn. This is because there is an increase of abdominal pressure which can push food upwards. Try to lose weight by regular exercise, drink lots of water and eat proper foods.

DRINK MODERATELY

The muscle that prevents food from going up is being relaxed when you drink alcohol. In addition, alcohol intake triggers your stomach to produce more acid which doubles the chances of acid reflux from happening. If getting rid of alcohol is difficult for you, try to consume them in lesser quantity.
