The term “depression” has been loosely used in many situations, where someone can simply feel “down in the dumps.” Depression, however, is a clinical condition, and depression signs include more than just sighs and sadness – they can be graver, and the depression symptoms can be assessed only by the person who is undergoing depression.

How do you know that someone near you is depressed? And how do you know if you are depressed?

Symptoms of Depression

If you think that someone close to you is depressed, watch for the following symptoms of depression.

Is the person concerned sleeping more frequently? Depression can lead a person to feel weak at some times, yet energetic at others. If the person’s sleep patterns are disrupted – that is, if the person sleeps during the day and is awake at night – then it may be a sign of mild depression.

Is the person concerned lethargic? Does the person lack enjoyment or enthusiasm of activities the person used to enjoy or be excited about? Depression changes moods, and an activity that could once make a person happy will actually remind the same person that life used to be happier than the present. This can actually aggravate the depression.

Is the person concerned deliberately avoiding encounters with other people? Depression can make someone feel worthless, and this will often lead to low levels of confidence – a condition that ensues in reclusion, as a person wallows in his or her own sinking self-esteem and stays away from the world.

Signs of Depression

Do you notice the following in your daily behavior and activities?

Do you feel miserable? Sadness can be temporary, but the real depression symptoms arise when you feel that you no longer enjoy the things that you used to. Misery is a deeper sort of sadness: it refers to feeling like a failure, or thinking that you are a burden to others. At the most extreme, you may feel that life is not worth living.

Do you feel that life is unfair? Depression symptoms may push you to think that you have no future or hope, and that no matter what you or no matter how hard you try, you will make mistakes. You may also start thinking that life is “passing you by.”

Do you always feel tired? Depression will drain you, and you will usually feel exhausted, such that you do not want to do the smallest, simplest tasks. You may also find it difficult to keep a good mood, or think clearly. Such mood swings will also keep you from wanting to see or associate with other people. Your sleep patterns may also be disrupted: you will sometimes sleep a lot during the day, stay awake at night, or have disturbing dreams.

Do you worry for no reason? Do you have physical aches and pains which have no apparent cause?

If you notice these, then they are signs of depression, and you must consult an expert immediately.
