( Business )

Television infomercials can spell big business for infomercial producers, as well as easy purchasing for potential customers. TV infomercials now sell a wide variety of products at reasonable prices, all of them allowing a customer to spend more time at home, and less time walking through the mall or department store.

Some products marketed through TV infomercials assure many things, from slimmer waistlines to longer, shinier hair. But beware: infomercial hair products, although they appear to show much promise on TV, may actually be dangerous to your hair.

TV Infomercials

TV infomercials are produced with the aim of aggressively marketing a product to a small audience that may not necessarily need it. Infomercial companies are aware that a great part of the viewing demographic is made up of people who watch TV at home, spend a great part of their day running errands or cleaning the house, and thus have little time or attention to spare commercials. Thus, TV infomercials are designed to grab your attention at the shortest possible time.

Infomercial hair products can promise to make your hair softer and smoother, longer, or thicker, or can even promise hair growth in bald spots. They tend to show the classic “before and after” images: a once bald man ostracized by his peers now has more hair and more friends, or a girl once teased for her boring straight hair now gets praises for her tight curls.

The Magic Bullet Infomercial

Infomercial production does not concentrate on realistic scenarios, and sometimes offer a “magic bullet” solution, or a “one shot deal” to end all your hair woes. The magic bullet infomercial, however, can over-praise a hair product.

Infomercial hair products have usually not been tested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), despite claims to the contrary. Infomercial hair products that promise longer or thicker hair may contain hair growing solutions that work by dilating blood vessels, and which may cause harm to underlying hair tissue.

Infomercial hair products that promise thinner, smoother hair may also contain acids that damage hair roots. Other infomercial hair products can also contain herbs that have not been tested for their efficacy and safety. Not all infomercial hair products also work for all people, so take care when you consider purchasing products advertised through infomercials.

There is no single solution to the problems of straight hair, over-curled hair, or even hair loss. Be sure to consult with your dermatologist before using any infomercial hair products, and practice safety precautions at all times.
