What is a T1 Connection?

At home, you normally use internet service either with dial-up, cable modem or broadband connection. Typically, the speed of your home internet connection would be about 64, 128 or 256 kilobytes per second. That speed would have been fast enough to allow you to switch between several internet tasks and to download large files like videos in a matter of minutes.

Actually there exist higher internet connection speeds, perhaps double or triple that of what you are using at home. One of these is T1 or Trunk Level One, which can deliver a total transmission speed of about 1.5 megabytes per second.

T1 connections may either be full or fractional. A full or clear T1 connection has a speed of 1.5 megabytes per second while a fractional T1 connection may be divided into smaller channels with lower transmission speeds between 256 to 768 kilobytes per second.

Availability and Cost

As an internet user, you may have wanted the transmission speed to be as high as possible. Unfortunately, a high level full T1 connection speed is difficult to obtain, as there are only few internet service providers offering such.

While you spend only about fifty dollars or less monthly for a cable modem or broadband access, you would have to spend at least five times that amount if you want T1 connection speed. The monthly rate also depends on how far you are from the internet point of presence or POP. The farther you are, the higher the cost will be.

The high T1 connection speed and cost may be more ideal for businesses and big industries, especially broadcasting and telecommunications. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide if you really need T1 connection speed for your own business activities.

How to Look for T1 Providers

While very limited, there are actually several T1 providers that exist. You can access their websites to find out if they have available facilities for your area. The sites contain information about T1 and higher types of connections and their corresponding costs. The sites also provide toll-free numbers that you can call for free consultation.
