What is a Web Domain Name?

The web has become a great communication tool for everyone. Having your own website helps boost your business and social activities. It is practically your own home on the web where others get to know more about you and the products or services you offer. Your website is a venue which enables others to contact you directly, and if you wish, post messages on your site.

Just as you have your own residence address, the web domain name is your address on the web. An example of a web domain name is www.yournamehere.com. WWW is called the host name. At any time, you can extend your website by using different hosts, for instance using MAIL in place of WWW. The YOURNAMEHERE part is called the domain name. This is the most important element for identifying your website. The COM part is called the top-level domain name.

Finding a Web Domain Name Registrar

You will have to register your domain name for two reasons. First, you do not want anyone else to use your domain name. Second, domain name registrars are the only ones with access to the central domain name database of the World Wide Web. When people try to access your site, the database directs them to the right place.

Before you can register web domain names, you need to find an accredited registrar. COM is the most common top-level name which is available to all users, while GOV, ORG and EDU are exclusively for specific institutions only.

Choosing a Web Domain Name

After you find a suitable accredited domain name registrar, it is the time to think of a suitable domain name. You should check if the domain name you desire has already been taken. You can check this through the domain name search box which is provided in most accredited registrars. Or more conveniently, key in the domain name you want and see if it will bring you to an existing site. If it does, then you can no longer use this domain name.

If the web domain you chose is unique and available, you are now ready to register it with the accredited registrar. Most registrars require you to pay annual fees. The cost of registration generally depends on the type of registrar, and there are low cost domain name registrars, and even non-profit ones that allow you to register for free.
