What is an Overhead Projector?

An overhead projector is a large electrically-powered box with a transparent glass surface, a bright lamp and fan, plus an arm with a mirror. You can place a transparent film on top of the glass surface. The light from the lamp inside of the machine will shine on the film and project the image onto the mirror inside the projector's arm, which will reflect the image onto a white screen or wall, and to your audience. A knob on the side of the arm allows you to adjust the size and sharpness of the reflected image.

You can write data, print or photocopy images directly on the transparency film.

With its versatility and economical features, the overhead projector makes an ideal presentation equipment in cases where a computer-dependent LCD projector may not be possible.

The Importance of the Overhead Projector Bulb

Like the LCD projector bulb, the overhead projector bulb is perhaps the most important part of your projector. The bulb is responsible for projecting the transparency's images, so the quality of the light it emits affects the quality of the image.

A typical overhead projector has a power of about two to five hundred watts. The bulb's wattage is usually related to its level of illumination. The bulb heats very rapidly and is highly sensitive to impact especially during use.

Care and Maintenance of the Overhead Projector Bulb

Being very sensitive to heat and impact, the overhead projector bulb is often the first thing that breaks down in your projector. You must make sure that the bulb is installed properly prior to use, and that it is free of dust or fingerprint marks. When installing or replacing the overhead projector bulb, hold it with a soft dry cloth or tissue and never with your bare hand. Turn off the lamp of the projector before you install the bulb to avoid getting burned or electrocuted. Never expose the projector or its parts to moisture or extreme temperatures.

Do not leave the projector light on for extended periods of time as this can overheat the bulb. Make sure that there is enough space to move the projector, and avoid unnecessary moving or jolting.

How to Get Replacement Overhead Projector Bulbs

While an overhead projector bulb usually costs about ten dollars, you should have a spare one just in case the installed bulb malfunctions unexpectedly. Before buying overhead projector bulbs, make sure that it matches the model of the projector you are using.

You should also consider the bulb shape, size, capacity or wattage, base size, illumination level, and manufacturer.

You can order replacement bulbs through various online sources or from office equipment stores. It is best to bring an exact bulb sample, or at least a good photocopy showing its dimensions.
