Why Register Domain Names?

Before you construct your website, you need a domain name, which is equivalent to your official address on the web.

You want the users to be directed straight to your own site, which is possible only if you register domain names with an accredited domain registrar. It is like obtaining a patent because when you register a new domain, it becomes uniquely yours and no one else can use it. Your domain name is made of the name you have chosen plus the top-level domain name, or the three letters that come after the dot, such as COM or NET.

Tips in Registering Your Domain Name

Before you register domain names, check if the registrar belongs to the ICANN listing. The ICANN listing contains links to hundreds of accredited registrars. Each registrar gives you the top-level name options and their corresponding costs. It also informs you of top-level names that are for exclusive organizations only, such as EDU and GOV.

When selecting a domain name, think of a name that is easy to remember, sounds unique, and is appropriate for the product or service you are featuring in your site.

The next step is to check if anyone has already used your domain name. The easiest way to do this is to type in the web domain name as you would have wanted it to be, then see if this will lead you to any site. A more accurate way is to check if the domain name you want has already been taken, through the domain name search box which is provided in most accredited registrars.

Just click on REGISTER DOMAIN NAME button provided on the registrar's site, then follow all other instructions. The registrar will also inform you of the costs and how to pay for your registration.
