Background of Piper Aircraft Inc.

The company was originally known as Taylor Aircraft when it was founded eighty years ago. When its president took control over the entire company in 1935, he used his own last name for the company.

Piper Aircraft became noted for small compact aircraft that are very simple to operate and low on maintenance costs. However, the company had its share of ups and downs. In 1937, a fire destroyed the factory, and forced the company to relocate to another site. The company also folded in 1947 and was taken over by the bank, but soon recovered with sales of its newly developed short wing Vagabond model. And during the eighties, the company was forced to close down along with several other aircraft manufacturers due to exceedingly high insurance costs. It bounced back in the early nineties with the takeover by new management, and a more aggressive set of business strategies. Since then, Piper Aircraft has continued to develop innovative models with state of the art technology.

From two seaters to seven seaters, Piper Aircraft's planes have functioned in different ways, as air taxis, load haulers, combat, and even agricultural sprayers.

Evolution of Piper Aircraft Products

The company's first model was the Piper Cub, which became a byword whenever people talked about light aircraft for private use.

During the Second World War, the company modified its Cubs for military use and trained pilots intensively to fly the combat planes.

After the war, the company developed its first twin engine plane and started a tradition of using Indian tribe names for its models. It also built a new research and development base in Florida, which also serves as an experimental flight testing ground.

In the sixties, Piper Aircraft developed its single engine four place engine which was widely used for later models. A bigger model was also introduced, with a stretched cabin that could accommodate six people. This paved the way for more large models that later became popular for business use.

During the next decade, Piper developed more powerful aircraft with turbo engines, and its models became the main training aircraft for pilots of commercial airlines. The new six place single engine planes can easily rival the performance of jet aircraft, but at a fraction of the cost.

Piper Aircraft Today

Since its revival in the mid-nineties, the company has continually beefed up its customer service program and its research and development functions. The result is super light aircraft that can go at higher speeds and altitutes, and incorporate state of the art computer and internet facilities in its cockpit.

Piper Aircraft does not sell to you directly, but through authorized dealers around the country. You can get aircraft loans and other financing plans through the dealers, too.
