Birds as Health and Sanitation Hazards

The largest cities in the country are facing overpopulation problems not just from people but also from pigeons, geese, and other stray birds.

Birds, especially pigeons, may look picturesque when they fly in groups around parks and open spaces. But they have also become pests because they scatter excrement on park areas, rooftops of buildings, and vehicles. Their wastes are generally difficult to clean and can spread serious diseases like avian flu. Some strains of the avian flu virus have infected humans, as recent medical cases have shown. What is more disturbing is that birds are very mobile creatures, so they can easily move from one city to another and spread more harm.

And while birds can eat worms and other pests in your yard, they themselves become the enemies by destroying your flowers and fruits.

Methods of Bird Control

Some cities have taken initiative to cull the growing bird population by directly killing the birds with poison or bullets. A very tedious method is to gather the eggs from birdhouses or dovecotes and then destroy the eggs. These methods have sparked protests from environmentalist and animal rights activists.

Other cities have issued ordinances making it punishable by law to feed stray birds in public areas. However, most bird flocks live atop buildings which are technically considered as private property and therefore not within the law's reach.

New Forms of Bird Control Products

Fortunately, modern science has developed safer and more humane ways to deal with bird pest control.

You can feed the birds with certain chemicals that will make them sterile and therefore control their number.

Electric or battery powered ultrasonic repellents can keep away birds from your roof or yard, so they will be forced to move to other places. These devices usually cost a few hundred dollars.

If you want to spend less, you can use visual scare devices. Just like farm scarecrows, visual scare devices can also be used in strategic places on your property such as your roof or garden pond. You can choose from a variety of replicas like foxes, alligators, owls or other natural bird enemies. Or you can also use devices with iridescent foil or strong lights that can scare the birds away.

You can also install spikes and needles to prevent birds from perching, or bird nets to keep them from entering open spaces on your balcony or roof.

Other bird control products are in the form of chemicals which contain substances that are offensive to birds and make them look for more hospitable habitats.

It is easy to order bird control products either by phone or through the internet. An expert from the bird control company can visit your premises to determine what would be the best bird control method to suit your needs and budget.
