The Need to Seal Your Mail

Before you can mail a letter, document or brochure, you need to seal the envelope that it is enclosed in. Sealing your mail helps protect its contents against loss and damage, as well as maintain its confidentiality.

Ways to Seal Mail

Most envelopes already have a self sealing feature on the flap, and you just need to wet the flap and apply pressure to seal it. For envelopes or bags which don't have self seal flaps, you need to apply glue or other adhesive material on the flap. Once the mail is opened, the envelope loses its adhesiveness.

There are also non-adhesive self seal envelopes which conveniently allow the recipient to reuse the same envelope to send back responses. These resealable envelopes work pretty much like kitchen self seal bags, and are ideal for enclosing brochures or other non-confidential matter.

Wafer Seals, the Safer Alternative

Sealing your mail does not guarantee it from tampering before it reaches your recipient. Hence, some mailers use wafer seals especially for important documents or other highly confidential matter.

Also called mailing tabs, wafer seals are usually circular-shaped paper seals that have a self seal feature as well as a tamper-proof feature. Many wafer seals come with specific designs on them, so it is ideal for identifying specific organizations or government agencies. The wafer seal has smooth paper or cardboard backing and usually has perforation for easy removal and application to the envelope or package. The wafer seal can be used only once, and any signs of tampering will be evident.

If you want someone to reply to your mail, you can enclose a separate self mailing envelope in your mail package along with a wafer seal. The wafer seal can discourage unauthorized parties because of its tamper-proof feature.

Most stationery and office supply stores sell generic types of wafer seals, or you can also order personalized seals through printers.

Other Uses of Wafer Seals

Many organizations have used the wafer seal not only to prevent tampering, but also as a means of identification. You can personalize the size, shape and design of your wafer seals. You can add colors, gold or silver finish and graphics.

Wafer seals are used extensively on product packages and cartons. An intact or untampered wafer seal assures the user of the newness and quality of the contents.

The designs on some wafer seals have attracted hobbyists, who collect used wafer seals in the same manner that they collect used postage stamps.
